NFPA 85

NFPA 85 CONTROLS REVIEW

NFPA 85 is a specialized part of a larger fire prevention code and is specifically aimed at preventing boiler accidents.  The Boiler and Combustion Systems Hazards Code works to prevent explosions and implosions in boilers and improve general boiler safety.  This covers a range of items, from structural strength to operator training.

TRAX can help facilities assess the compliance of their controls with NFPA 85 guidelines.  During code reviews, TRAX sometimes finds that the existing FD fans may be insufficient to provide enough combustion air to reach 100% load on gas. Two options typically considered include:

Replacing the existing FD fans with larger capacity fans.

Install the appropriate duct work, dampers, and controls to allow the PA system to provide additional air to the secondary air system “PA Assist.”

TRAX studies can help determine the dynamics in either approach.
